[O] Soft 2.0.1

Soft – having a pleasing quality involving a subtle effect or contrast rather than sharp definition.

With iOS 7 taking the majority of iOS devices recently, it was important for it to be simple, distinct, and the goal was to introduce clarity and refinement to the user experience. One of the major aspects paid attention to were the icons. They are simple, flat, and get right to the point, but unfortunately I felt Apple could have done a better job designing them. The icons have strong and confusing gradients, sudden and harsh whites, and just down right sub-standard icons.

With many months of work and dedication I am very pleased to introduce “Soft”, a new theme for iOS 7. Soft doesn't just fix the icons with smooth gradients, and phenomenal icon standards, they were all designed to match the user experience, connect with the user, and fix what Apple did wrong. Take for example the Game Center icon. Its different, but looks subpar compared to the rest of the icons (they don’t look so great either). The icon incorporates skeuomorphic elements that serve no purpose, and doesn’t match the direction that iOS 7 holds. So why not make it a dice? It's the perfect shape that fits perfectly with the icon, shape and size. The colors of each dot were carefully picked to match the game center experience when you open the app.
This relationship was kept in mind for all the stock and App Store icons, and they all just make sense. I wanted to create something with purpose and to be distinctively elegant, but at the same time incorporating elements that match seamlessly with each app. Each icon includes new and unique elements such as shadows, transparency, and blur also noticed all over in iOS 7.

Soft for iPhone, and soon for iPad, is my take on the perfect iPhone experience. Using a custom grid and similar design elements, I was able to maintain purpose and similarity to all the icons. Adding subtle but noticeable interface refinements, such as improving readability on the status bar, more apparent arrows, allowed me to create something entirely new that feels like it should have been there in the first place. These icons, refinements, sounds, and wallpapers all hold beautifully together on your iPhone, and blend in with iOS 7 to keep you wanting more.
